Asayas arrived in Taiwan in the 1980s, where he met Yang Dechang, Hou Hsiao-hsien and other new directors of "just out of School." That period was also the time when young mainland directors such as Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou appeared in the film industry. They are young artists of the same generation, and their hearts have a lot in common. Assayas once made a documentary Portrait of Hou Hsiao-hsien to pay tribute to Hou Hsiao-hsien. He has seen all Hou Hsiao-hsien's films, but it took him only five days to shoot the documentary and two months to edit it. In the film, he followed director Hou Xiaoxian back to his hometown, recording the mental journey of this contemporary Chinese film master.
