On the beach, with huge waves, the mighty knight Bullock (Max Foncido Max von Sydow) and death in black (Bent Echelot Bengt Ekerot) set up a game of life and death. In the process of playing chess, the knight is looking back on his life, and what he has seen and heard conforms to the biblical picture. In the late period of the Crusades in the 14th century, the plague spread on the European continent and people were living in poverty. Bullock once met a couple in a circus. The husband believed in the gods and was very pious, while the wife was more realistic and obedient. Their mutual help makes happiness readily available. The knight met the blacksmith and his wife in the woods. The blacksmith was very rude and his wife was very coquettish, and they played double games in the woods to passers-by, like a pair of ridiculous puppets. Finally, after the memorial ceremony of collective worship, the samurai and his friends once again met death, helplessness and fear, anger and doubt, all turned into questions of life. This film won the jury Award of the 10th Cannes Film Festival.
