In the fall of 1957, Cathy (Julianne Moore) and her husband Frank (Dennis Quaid) lived a comfortable and peaceful life in a small town in Connecticut, with two children under ten years old. His family attracted the envy of many people. To Cathy's surprise, she found out that her husband had had sex with a man, and she felt that her world was about to fall. She talks to the well-bred black gardener Raymond (Dennis Heisbert), and Cathy feels encouraged by Raymond's comfort. But soon because of race, people began to treat Cathy in a different way. Kathy and her husband are afraid of gossip, so they have been struggling to maintain a relationship, but each has a lover in their hearts.
