In London in 1988, Cyril Bender and Shirley, who had lived together for ten years, worked hard, paid little, but were ready to help others. Cyril's sister Valerie and brother-in-law Martin are rich, showing off their wealth and being bossy. Cyril's mother lives near her son, and her neighbors are also stupid and selfish upstarts. Valerie prepared a family party to celebrate her mother's 70th birthday, regardless of whether her mother agreed or not. Martin tried to seduce Shirley at the party and everyone broke up in discord. Cyril said sincerely that he wanted a world where everyone had enough to eat, a house to live in and a job to do. Early the next morning, Cyril, Shirley and her mother were on the roof platform, watching the light of the city. With several characters from different classes in contemporary Britain, this film criticizes contemporary British society and has deep respect for the unrestrained protagonists Cyril and Shirley from beginning to end. The film director Mike Lee's working method is unconventional. He doesn't have a script on hand. Instead, he brings in a group of actors to choose their own roles, familiar with and create "the small world of characters and the whole world"-including clothing, food, housing, transportation, friends, love and all aspects. When each actor understands and goes deep into the character, Mike also constructs the structure of the whole film.
