The film, based on a novel by James James Ellroy, depicts Los Angeles, where the police force is corrupt and criminal in the 1950s. Jack Vincent (Kevin Spacey) is a police celebrity who often appears in the TV media, colluding with the gossip reporters of the Shh newspaper to earn extra money by creating and exposing star sex news. Eddard Eisley (Guy Pierce) follows his father's career into the police station, ambitious and rigorous, promoted for betraying colleagues and excluded by everyone; Bud White (Russell Crowe) is selfless, but impulsive, easy to be exploited. A suspected robbery in a restaurant linked the three men. Eddard Eisley found three black suspects, was sentenced to death, and received a reward from his superiors, but on further investigation, he found that the case was not that simple, and he persuaded Jack Vincent to pursue it with him. Bud White had always been suspicious of the restaurant murder, and the clues he found showed that the case was not as simple as he thought. The three men were quickly involved in a mixture of pornography, drugs, murder, betrayal, corruption and conspiracy.
