The story takes place in a remote town in France, where our protagonist Julian (Jim Ross Stewart Kim Rossi Stuart) was born. In troubled times, Yu Lian had lofty ideals from an early age. Although he was born humble, he still cherished the illusion of squeezing into the upper-class society, and made continuous efforts to this end. At the age of 19, Yu Liancheng was forced to leave the town after having an affair with the mayor's wife, Louis (Carol Buguet Carole Bouquet), for the tutor of Mayor Renard (Bernard Villei Bernard Verley). After several twists and turns, Yu Liancheng falls in love with Julian as the private secretary of the Marquis de la Mor (Claude Claude Rich) and the Marquis's daughter Matilde (Judith Godric Judith Godr è che).
