Ned's Rifle is the final chapter of the trilogy, and the first two books, Henry Fool and Fay Grim, provide the right ending for looking at the fringes of American society from an alternative perspective. Henry (Thomas Jay Ryan, characters in Henry the fool) and Fay (Parker Posey, characters in the National Code) also appear in the film, but they become a portrait looking lovingly at their son Ned,Ned, 18, who has only recently been released from witness protection. Although Christians took care of him from his adoptive father, a church pastor, Ned set the goal of revenge: to kill his father because the man had ruined his mother's life. When the serious and dignified young man began his journey of revenge, he soon found himself in a typical Hartley heresy gang.
