Until dawn, the survivors had been lying on the floating bow. Until it was finally rescued by the residents of the Romans who supported the allies. The two islanders handed over the famous coconut with Kennedy's distress signal to the United States Coast Guard. After six days of trouble, Kennedy and his crew boarded safely on a sister ship, the PT-157. The survival journey to rescue the PT-109 crew earned Kennedy the title of war hero and was the cornerstone of Kennedy's legend.
