This extremely luxurious costume drama is set in the spring of 1866 on the eve of the conflict between Italy and Austria. It describes an Italian aristocratic woman, Countess Serpieri, who betrays her marriage and country, and desperately falls in love with the handsome and surly Austrian officer Lieutenant Franz Mahler. The two fall in love vigorously, but the times have changed dramatically and eventually lead to tragedy.
