The story takes place just after the end of the second World War, and everything is waiting to be done. Soldier Charles (Fan Johnson Van Johnson) after completing his mission as a soldier, decided to stay in Paris, enter the literary and art world, and become a writer. In Paris, Charles meets Helen (Elizabeth Taylor Elizabeth Taylor) and Marianne (Donna Reed Donna Reed) sisters. Soon, Charles and Helen fall in love, the two become husband and wife, and have the crystallization of their love. Although his love life was plain sailing, Charles' career did not improve. When he was unable to succeed, he was discouraged and began to rely on alcohol to send his inner depression. One day, the drunken Charles locked Helen out. Helen died of pneumonia. Marianne took their children. Charles lost everything.
