The title of Somerset Maugham's novel "The Painted Veil" is taken from Shelley's poetry and the original word is "Lift not the painted veil which those who live / Call Life". Director Ronald Nim adapted the novel into a film in 1957, and director John Karan adapted the novel into the film "Veil (English film title The Painted Veil)" in 2005. Synopsis: Hong Kong after World War II is waiting for prosperity. The heroine Carol (Eleanor Parker Eleanor Parker) is having an affair with a married man, Paul (Jean-Pierre Ormont Jean Pierre Aumont). Her husband, Walter (Bill Travers Bill Travers), a doctor, found out and asked her to make a choice: either go with him to a remote village in Chinese mainland, where he will control a cholera epidemic, or she would face a public divorce scandal.
