The story takes place in the 1920s, when Millie (Julie Andrews Julie Andrews), a beautiful and kind country girl, left her hometown and went to the metropolitan New York alone to show her ambition. How could she know that the reality was so cruel that a series of setbacks immediately poured cold water on her. Eventually, Millie became a typist and fell in love with her suave boss. By chance, Millie meets a boy named Jimmy (James Fox James Fox). The two are not happy with each other at first, even can be described as bad feelings, but with the passage of time, they both discover the beautiful qualities hidden in each other's souls and are attracted by them. Dorothy (Mary Taylor Moore Mary Tyler Moore) is Millie's best friend in town. She also meets her love when she works with Jimmy.
