The play is written by Russell Lewis, the creator of Detective Moss's prequel Endeavour, and is adapted from Peter James's Roy Grace novel series. The first season consists of two 120-minute stories, adapted from the novels Dead Simple and Looking Good Dead. The show tells the story of the superintendent's protagonist Roy Grace (John Simm) whose career is in the doldrums because of his unconventional methods, and the disappearance of his wife Sandy. At this time, Detective Glenn Branson asked him for help, and he had a case in which the groom-to-be disappeared due to a prank after the bachelor party; Roy, who took over the case, kept tracking the groom's whereabouts based on intuition, suspicion and persistence, and therefore contacted the bride-to-be.
