The play is adapted from Laura Lippman's best-selling novel of the same name. On Thanksgiving Day 1966, the disappearance of a teenage girl swept through Baltimore, and the lives of two women collided fatally. Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman) is a Jewish housewife who tries to get rid of her secret past and re-become an investigative journalist;Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) is a mother who struggles at the bottom of Baltimore's ghetto politics while struggling to support her family. At first, their vastly different lives seemed parallel and unconnected, but when Maddie began to focus on Cleo's inexplicable death, a rift opened, putting everyone around them at risk.
