The story of the show revolves around two fictional British newspapers. One is the "Herald" newspaper (Herald), which is worked by the heroine Holly Evans (Charlotte Riley). As an old-fashioned, left-leaning newspaper that focuses on serious news (widely seen by British audiences as alluding to the real Guardian), the Herald faces plummeting sales and shrinking audiences in today's Internet age. Another newspaper in the play is the Post, which focuses on gossip and populist news. Led by editor-in-chief Duncan Allen (Ben Chaplin), the newspaper is growing with news that attracts attention but constantly blinds the moral boundaries.
