The sinking of the Lakonia is a TV movie released by BBC 2, directed by Uwe Janson and written by Alan Bleasdale. The show marks the return of Bleasdale, the screenwriter of "Boys From The Blackstuff", "GBH", "Jake's Progress" and "Oliver Twist" to television ten years later. Inspired by the true story of World War II, the play is a film about human nature. On the night of September 12, 1942, the militarily modified Laconia was hit and sank by a torpedo fired by a German naval submarine Urip156 on its way back to England from Egypt. The Laconia was now 600 miles off the coast of Africa with British civilians, allies and Italian prisoners of war on board. These lives hung by a thread until submarine commander Werner Hartenstein disobeyed the order of the Nazi supreme commander and made a shocking decision. The German submarine rose to the surface, and Hartenstein commanded his subordinates to rescue as many survivors as possible. In the next few days, the Umuri 156 submarine rescued 400 people, 20.
