The film three generations, written by Nicole Beckwell (Nikole Beckwith), depicts a New York teenager Ray (Ray, Ellie Fanning / ElleFanning) exploring her identity as she transforms from a woman to a man, and her single mother Maggie (Maggie, Naomi Wirtz / NaomiWatts) has to accept the fact that her only daughter becomes a son. Meanwhile, Maggie's mother, Dolly (Dolly, Susan Sarandon / Susan Sarandon), a smart music manager who shares high-end social resources with her same-sex partner, is racking her brains over Ray's fate-changing decision while worrying that Maggie never moved out of the house where she grew up.
