Larry Gopnik (Michael Stubb Michael Stuhlbarg) is a physics professor at a university in Shuangcheng District, Minnesota, USA. When the school is deciding whether to grant him tenured professorship, a Korean student complains to Larry about the unfair score on the exam and then bribes Larry after being rejected. Meanwhile, Larry's wife Judith (Sarilenick Sari Lennick) says she falls in love with widower Cy Eberman (Fred Melamad Fred Melamed) and asks for a divorce. Not only that, Larry's unemployed neurotic brother Arthur (Richard Kander Richard Kind) is increasingly becoming a burden, his son's bar mitzvah is just around the corner, his daughter steals money to get plastic surgery for his nose, and an anonymous letter is about to ruin his future. The embattled Larry turned to a number of Jewish priests for help, but can faith help him out? The film was nominated for Best original Screenplay at the British Film and Television Association Award and Best Actor in Musical and Comedy at the Golden Globe Award (Michael Stubba).
