The story takes place in Russia in the 19th century. As the wife of Karenin (Ralph Richardson Ralph Richardson), Anna (Vivienne Vivien Leigh) falls in love with count Wallensky (Keelung Moore Kieron Moore) accidentally. Anna, who pursues her inner feelings, starts cohabiting with Warrensky regardless of ethical and moral constraints. Despite Anna's demands, Karenin refused her request for divorce. Not only that, Karenin took her beloved son from Anna and forbade them to meet. Soon after, Anna became pregnant, and the nightmare began. Miscarriage, alcoholism, drug dependence, and a series of blows made Anna fall to the bottom of her life, but what really broke Anna was Warrensky's increasingly cold attitude towards her. Finally, under the pressure of Warrensky's betrayal and public opinion, the desperate Anna ended her young life under the railway tracks.
