Charlotte (Ingrid Bergman) is an outstanding pianist in an orchestra. Her daughter Eva (Liv Ulmann) is the wife of a priest who works in a rural community. There is a deep emotional gap between the two. There has been no communication for seven years. After learning that Charlotte's second husband had died, Eva wrote to invite Charlotte to live with her. They both tried to get along well, but could not help bringing it up again. Eva resented Charlotte for not giving her enough love in her childhood and focused on her own career, alienating herself from another daughter, Helene (Lena Niman), who was highly disabled and could only communicate with others. Charlotte was also depressed and frowned because Helene lived with Eva and her husband's death hit her very hard.
