The story takes place in Rome in the 1950s. A very famous director plans to recruit a young actor for his new film. Madalena (Anna Magnani) learns the news and decides to bring her daughter Maria (Tina Apicella) to the audition. Madalena's family's financial situation is very tight, so she regards this audition as a rare opportunity to make the family prosperous. When Madalena learned that actors needed to dance in the film, she took great pains to send Maria to dance school. Her series of mysterious operations made the already affluent family even worse. At the same time, Maria's psychological pressure was growing, and her childish little face gradually lost its smile.
