The beloved is set in Paris, London and Prague. The story is divided into two parts. One takes place in the golden age of sexual openness and women's liberation in the 1960s, when Parisian woman Madeleine came to Prague with her new husband Jalomir. However, Soviet tanks moved into the city to force the separation of the two men. The second paragraph is that three decades later, people in the 1990s realized the horror of AIDS and the fear of commitment was a disease of the century. Madeleine's daughter, Vera, met Henderson in London, who thought she was incapable of falling in love.
