Bright, a former black slave, became friends with the former landlord Aaron after the Civil War of liberating the slaves, and the two went to the western prairie, where they set up a farm to start a new life. But in a small town with unsound laws in the west, their lives are not peaceful. Local ruffian Carl Glenn's malicious provocation aroused Bright's anger, the two clashed, although Glenn fled as a result, but he vowed to come back for revenge. One summer night, when Bright happened to take his wife Mary and son Blank on vacation, Glenn attacked their farm with gunfire. Aaron's wife Charlotte was shot and killed, and Aaron was seriously injured. Bright, who returned from vacation, regretted the hatred he had forged on the spur of the moment and inquired about the whereabouts of the murderer. Aaron has been depressed since his wife's death, indulging in drunkenness all day and can't get rid of it. In a trance, Aaron recalled the appearance of the murderer in the battle, and decided to find his whereabouts and avenge his wife. Bright worried that Aaron would do something illegal on impulse, ruined his life, took the advice of the district governor, and became a sheriff, hoping to catch up with Aaron and give him a hand.
