In 1992, successive years of tribal wars left the East African country of Somalia in ruins, making the people miserable. The resulting famine killed 300,000 people. Mohammed Farah Aidid, the dictator who controlled the capital Mogadishu, stole relief supplies from international organizations, a move that aroused public outrage around the world. The insane Aidid declared war on international peacekeeping organizations, and the United States sent 160 special forces members to Mogadishu to overthrow Aidid's regime. This group of hot-blooded soldiers were full of confidence, but the war was stuck in a stalemate due to insufficient intelligence collection. During an operation to hunt down two top officials of the Aidid regime, the special forces encountered strong resistance from Somali militia.
