During Franco's reign in Madrid, Spain, Anna (Ana Torrent), a girl, and two sisters are passed on to their aunt after the death of her father Anselmo, a military officer. Anselmo is having an affair when he is alive, and her mother Maria (Geraldine Chaplin) ends up suffering in a lonely and depressed life for him and dies early. Memories of her mother popped up in Anna's mind from time to time, and these memories, mixed with her imagination about death, slowly affected real life. The three sisters were restless under the care of their aunt, who was in a relationship with Anselmo's married comrade-in-arms, and Anna's behavior made her feel more and more threatened. Anna tried to use a bottle of poison to help her grandmother, who could not take care of herself, commit suicide, but the bottle was just soda, the grandmother refused to take the poison, and Anna targeted her aunt. This film won many awards such as the jury Award of the Cannes Film Festival in 1976.
