Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess Jim Sturgess), a psychiatrist and scholar who claims to be from Oxford University, travels to the remote Stonehurst Psychiatric Hospital, where he hopes to learn about treatment with the accomplished Professor Silas Lyme (Ben Kingsley Ben Kingsley). Silas looked gloomy, and the treatment used was very different from the popular methods at that time, but it seemed that the mental state of the patients had been relieved and recovered to a certain extent. In the meantime, Edward is attracted by the beautiful and demure lady Eliza Graf (Kate Beckinsell Kate Beckinsale), who suffers from psychogenic hysteria. Edward, a newcomer, was vaguely aware of the weirdness of the hospital, and he soon discovered the terrible and amazing secret behind the hospital. This film is based on Poe's short story the Therapy of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fisher.
