Bergman plays an American lady living in Rome, whose son suddenly committed suicide, awakening her to do charity for society. Her friends advised her to get close to the people in person in order to know the sufferings of the people, so she resolutely got rid of the fetters of the upper-class society, went deep into the people, and found that there were serious social problems such as poverty and unemployment. Later, she simply left the family and moved in with a poor prostitute, only to attract rough intervention from her husband.
