Harry (Art Carney) is a retired teacher who has fought for his wife and daughter all his life. Living on the Upper West side of New York, he has never pursued anything for himself. When the government decided to demolish Harry's house in order to build a parking lot, he packed up and took his most loyal friend Tonto on a journey across the United States. He visited his children and friends for many years along the way, so he made many new friends. The film, directed by Paul Mazursky, won the 1974 Academy Award for Best Actor and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in Comedy and Music.
