The story begins with Fellini's recollection of his childhood, showing the scenery of the small town of Rimini in northern Italy in 1925. One night, the teenager saw a circus setting up a tent in the square outside the window. Strangely and unexpectedly, he sneaked into the tent and saw animals such as elephants, lions and horses, as well as Hercules, animal trainers, tall women, midgets and other strange people. Fellini shows at great length the pleasure of watching the circus and vaguely gives people a sense of his nostalgia for childhood.
