The story takes place during World War II, when the gunfire of the war destroyed the homes on which civilians lived. In desperation, they had to embark on a journey of escape. In an enemy bombing, five-year-old girl Paulie (Brigittte Fauci Brigitte Fossey) witnessed the killing of her parents and dog. In fear and shock, Polly finds the dog's body, and when she is heartbroken, a boy named Mike (Ghiorgis Berjoli Georges Poujouly) appears in front of her. Moved by Polly's misery, Mike persuaded his parents to adopt the poor girl and made a grave for her puppy. However, what Mike did could not ease Polly's pain. Looking at her sad face, Mike thought of an idea. The two children collected the bodies of animals who died in the war and built tombstones for them with stolen crosses, but to the surprise of the two children, it was this act of kindness that led to their final separation.
