Before World War I, the German ancestor (Oscar Weinell Oskar Werner) and the Frenchman Jim (Henri Sail Henri Serre) met in Paris. They share the same interests, have a strong and common interest in poetry and novels, and are even fascinated by the same sculpture. Naturally, both Zu and Zhan fall in love with the same woman: the smart and beautiful Catherine (Jeanne Morrow Jeanne Moreau).
