One of the most admired works in Czech animation history, it combines unique puppets, gorgeous oil paintings and real images of mouse activity. The film is a modern version of a medieval German legend about a rat catcher punishing the shameless town of Hamelin. The piper fulfilled the town's wishes and eliminated the rat plague for them, but the residents only knew how to make ill-gotten gains all day, and they refused to pay him. They are more greedy than mice, and the piper treats them like rats. In fact, for cartoons, the storyline is often secondary. The best thing about "the Man who plays the Flute" is obviously not the story itself, but the shape of those Gothic people and objects full of tension lines, as well as the background depiction of towns and countryside. They exaggerate the atmosphere of abrupt and indifference with distorted contours and exaggerated changes. The relief of metal color not only makes people feel cold and gray, but also makes the shape more clear and resolute, and the image is distinct.
