In 1850, a drunken fisherman (Emile Kusturica Emir Kusturica) was sentenced to death for murder in a remote French island. However, the mountains were high and the emperor was far away, and there were no execution tools such as guillotine, so the island officials turned to the French headquarters and asked them to bring them all the way to the guillotine. During this waiting time, the benevolent captain's wife (Juliet Binoche Juliette Binoche) believes that the fisherman is not bad in nature. She has been taking care of the garden since she followed her husband to the desolate island. Now she asks the fisherman to help her trim the garden and do all kinds of trivial housework. The fisherman and the captain's wife did good together and were welcomed by the residents. The captain (Daniel Odeyer Daniel Auteuil) knows that the two are getting along well with each other, and even love each other, but out of selfless love for his wife, he just silently chooses to make his wife happy. As the days wore on, the guillotine was finally delivered. The captain, the captain's wife and the fisherman also ushered in a turning point in their fate.
