After her husband's death, Laura (Judy Dench Judi Dench) has been depressed. Friends around her have advised her to find something she is interested in to distract her. Unexpectedly, the thing she is interested in is buying a closed theater for Laura. Laura, who knows nothing about running the theater, brings in professional Van Damm (Bob Hoskins Bob Hoskins). The tough character of the two old men leads to a lot of quarrels but also brings a glimmer of life to their lives. Laura named the theatre Windermere Theatre, and their operation was a great success. But good luck was not always there, and soon competitors followed Laura's example, and the business of the Windermere Theater plummeted. In order to save the situation, Laura made a bold decision to perform a striptease in the theatre. The decision was like a boulder thrown into the sea, causing countless waves, but Laura's strong will allowed the performance, which is almost impossible to pass the review, to be approved. But just as the audience was waiting to see, the war broke out.
