In 1901, a thief (Mel Gibson) committed murder and was awaiting execution. The warden's wife (Diane Keaton) decides to save his soul for God. She read the Bible to him, hoping that after he was hanged, his soul would ascend to heaven instead of hell. They are attracted to each other. She helped him plan his escape and then joined him. During the escape, they had sex, but only this once. As the authorities' manhunt approached, she realized that he had no choice but to die, so she decided to die with him. "shoot me," she begged him. "I don't want to live one day longer than you." He pulled the trigger, but only hurt her. At the end, she was sentenced to life in prison, but she walked proudly into her cell and spit into the eyes of the prison guard.
