This film describes the life of Matsugoro, a rickshaw driver who is addicted to gambling and likes to compete with others. Matsumoto was acquainted with the army captain's family, but the captain died suddenly, so Matsugoro took up the responsibility of taking care of the orphans and widows on behalf of the captain until the captain's son grew up. This film was originally directed by Idan Wanzuo (the father of Yidan XIII), based on the biography of Fujima Matsugoro, which was later filmed by Hiroshi Inagaki because of Idan's illness.
