In the latter part of the Korean War, in July 1953, when the warring parties were negotiating a peaceful armistice, the US military ordered Lieutenant Clemens to lead an American company to attack Hill 255 with no military value in order to increase the stakes on the negotiating table. They knew that a peace agreement could be reached at any time in the Panmunjom armistice negotiations, so some soldiers were reluctant to make unnecessary sacrifices. However, Lieutenant Clemens thought it was their patriotic duty, and under his command, the US military fought against the Chinese and North Korean troops on the Pig Chop Hill position, and even engaged in brutal hand-to-hand combat. By the time the reinforcements arrived, there were only 25 men left in the 135-strong company.
