In 1858, in the ghetto of Bologna, the pope's soldiers broke into Motala's house and, on the order of the cardinal, they wanted to take away Motala's seven-year-old son, Edgaro. The child was secretly baptized by a babysitter as a baby, and there is no doubt about papal law: he must be educated in Catholicism. Motala's parents are so heartbroken that they will get their son back at all costs. With the support of the international Jewish community and public opinion, the struggle of the Motala family soon took on political overtones. But the church and the pope will not agree to return the child because it will help consolidate increasingly shaky power.
