The film's male protagonist, Keaton (Buster Keaton), is a rural theater projectionist. He likes to read detective books and often fantasizes that he is a great detective like Fulmore. One day, he falsely claimed to give chocolate candy worth one yuan to his girlfriend Kathleen (Kathryn McGuire) for four yuan. Unexpectedly, his rival took the opportunity to frame him, saying that Keaton had stolen someone else's watch and stockpiled it to get money to buy chocolate. Kathleen believed the slander, kicked Keaton out of the door and cancelled the engagement between the two. After Keaton visited, he discovered that his rival was the one who stole the watch and pawned it, but he had no evidence to clear his grievances.
