Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart Humphrey Bogart) is a private investigator who is invited to General Sternwood's home that day. Sternwood asks Marlowe to investigate a debt about his daughter, Carmen Sternwood, who owes a gambling debt to a man named Geiger. When Marlowe wants to leave, Sternwood's eldest daughter Vivian (Lauren Bacall Lauren Bacall) drops him under the column and tells him that the real purpose of her father's investigation is to find a missing friend, and Marlow will be convinced. The next day Marlow goes to look for Geiger, only to hear a gunshot in front of Geiger's house. When Marlow enters, only to find Geiger's body and a bound Carmen Sternwood (played by Marta Vickers Martha Vickers), and a camera. Marlow took the camera and took it.
