In Texas in the 1930s, blacks were deprived of the right to vote, and were segregated and discriminated against in employment, justice, military service, marriage and other aspects. Mel Tolson (Denzel Washington in Denzel Washington) wants his countrymen to do something. He set up the first debate team of the black high school at the school. After careful selection, four students take off: Hamilton (Jermaine Williams Jermaine Williams), Henry (Nate Parker Nate Parker), Samantha (Juni Smollett Jurnee Smollett) and James (Denzel Whitaker Denzel Whitaker). On the road of the growth of the debate team, Mel constantly challenged the traditional ideas of the society at that time. His rebellious spirit and his fierce teaching methods were constantly bombarded by people, but he always stuck to his beliefs and finally entered Harvard University with the debate team.
