Paul (Paul Giamatti), a teacher at Patton College, a prep school, is not very popular. Students, teachers and principals don't like him very much. They think he is grandiose and rigid. During the Christmas holiday in 1970, Paul stayed at school to supervise students who could not go home. A few days later, only one student remained-a 15-year-old troublemaker named Angus, a good student spoiled by bad behavior, always on the brink of being expelled. Along with Paul and Angus was Mary, the school chef, an African-American woman who served the sons of the privileged class, who recently disappeared in Vietnam. The three very different losers formed a strange Christmas family, sharing their unfortunate experiences during the snowy two weeks in New England and realizing that none of them thanked them for their past.
