This is a true story of one of the most dramatic power transfers in nearly 2000 years. Bishop Bergoglio (played by Jonathan Place) is so disappointed with the direction the church is heading that he applies to Pope Benedict (played by Anthony Hopkins) to retire in 2012. However, in the face of scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summoned his harshest critics and future successors to Rome, where, within the walls of the Vatican, these two very different men faced their pasts head-on in an attempt to find common ground and create a future for a billion believers around the world.
