Karen (Harriet Andersson), who inherits her mother's mental illness, is hospitalized and arranged by writer father David (Gunnar Bj ö rnstrand) to recuperate on a small island. Karen boyfriend Martin (Max von Sydow) is a doctor, their relationship is at a low ebb at this time, Martin believes that Karen has the possibility of recovery.
