There are two irreconcilable gangs in the slums of western Manhattan, the Rockets, led by White River, and the Sharks, led by Bernardo, a Puerto Rican. The two gangs hate each other and often fight and cause trouble. At a West side dance, the two gangs dance with each other. Reeve's friend Tony (Richard Bemel Richard Beymer) and Bernardo's sister Maria (Natalie Wood Natalie Wood) fall in love at first sight.
