Augie (Jacob Tremblay) is a 10-year-old boy who is no different from any other child his age except for wearing a huge space helmet. Under the helmet hides Auggie's face, which is scarred by various surgeries. It not only perfectly hides Auggie's fragile and self-abased heart, but also successfully prevents Auggie's appearance from scaring other children. Auggie did not go to school, and all of his cultural knowledge was taught to him at home by his mother Isabel (Julia Roberts). However, Isabel gradually felt that home classes could not meet Auggie's growth needs. In addition to learning knowledge, Auggie must also learn how to communicate with people other than her family. Amid anxiety, Isabel sent Augie to a public school, where he faced challenges he had to overcome in life.
