The story focuses on the westward journey of the Dutton family many years ago, crossing the Great Plains to the last wild land of the United States in search of a better future in Montana, the promised land. Elliott, who plays the tough cowboy Shea Brennan, has a very sad past. He takes on the difficult task of leading a group of people from Texas to Montana and will not tolerate fools. McGraw and Hill play the Dutton family's male and female parents James and Margaret.
