In the aftermath of the Russian revolution, count Alexander Rostov found his glamorous past putting him on the wrong side of history. He, who was not immediately executed, was exiled by the Soviet Revolutionary Court to the attic of the Metropolitan Hotel and would face death if he set foot outdoors again. As time went by, Russia outside the hotel experienced the most turbulent decades, and Rostov's limited situation allowed his spirit to enter a wider world. As he established a new life in the hotel, Rostov discovered the true value of friendship, family and love.
