The single-shot sitcom, based on Chinese-American Chef Eddie Huang's memoir New here, focuses on the story of a Taiwanese family who settled in Orlando in the 1990s. Huang Yiming, whose parents are both Taiwanese immigrants, has loved everything about America since he was a child, especially hip-hop. His father is still well integrated into the local society, but his mother is often confused by the white culture. His father runs an all-American steak restaurant chain and dreams of the "American Dream" with the whole family. At the same time, they should try their best to maintain their national cultural identity and ensure the integrity of their families. The title of the play "fresh off the boat" is a common saying, which usually refers to a new generation of immigrants who go to the United States to pursue the "American Dream".
