The play is adapted from Lauren Beukes's best-selling novel The Shinning Girls. The story is about Kirby Mazrachi (Elisabeth Moss), a Chicago journalist who survives a brutal attack, but finds that her reality has changed dramatically in her pursuit of the attacker. After learning that a recent murder is similar to his own, Kirby and troublesome senior journalist Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) form a partner to identify the attacker. The two men gradually discovered that there was a connection between these cold cases, but their personal trauma and Kirby's own vague reality led to the attackers always getting a head start.
